Hunting the Spiral Horns - ELAND

Hunting the Spiral Horns - ELAND
Edited by: Peter Flack

Written by some of the top professional and amateur African hunters, the object of this book has been to produce the definitive work on hunting four of the five eland subspecies available on licence. The fifth subspecies, the Western giant eland, is highly endangered and is not available on licence although the current circumstances of the animal are referenced. To this end, a number of experienced eland hunters – some 20 in all – have contributed brand new chapters to the book. They read like the Who’s Who of eland hunting and include such icons as Don Cowie, Anthony Dyer, Robin Hurt, Craig Boddington, Ivan Carter and Kevin Robertson, to name but a few.
Apart from in-depth research on eland themselves, there are chapters on “How To” hunt these incredible animals, Rifles, Calibres, Cartridges and Bullets, and Clothing and Equipment. Exciting accounts of successes and failures in the hunt for the huge, grey, “Blue Bulls” are included as well as further lessons sourced from hunters of yesteryear such as Cornwallis Harris, Maydon, Millais, Selous, Roosevelt and others. The book is complemented by outstanding photographs provided by the contributors as well as professional and amateur photographers and friends. Altogether, this 336 page book hosts some 350 colour photographs and 40 black and white ones. In brief, after reading this book you will know as much as it is possible to learn from a book about hunting eland – everyman’s elephant – these, at times, not so gentle giants of the African bush. This is the second in the five book series covering the hunting of all members of the spiral horn family.
It will make a welcome addition to any collection of hunting books and not only provide a worthwhile reference source but also top quality entertainment for many seasons to come.
